CAMI gets new Denali-style Terrain
CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll will begin building a high end Terrain Denali vehicle.
The Ingersoll-built Terrain is getting a high-end treatment and a stamp of luxury from General Motors.
CAMI Automotive, which assembles the crossover utility vehicle, will begin manufacturing a Denali-brand Terrain this year, hitting showrooms by year end.
The Denali brand will see new, upscale trim and features added to the entry-level CUV.
It’s believed the plant will build about 10,000 to 15,000 of the vehicles a year.
“It is a big step up,” said Mike Van Boekel, chairperson of the plant for the Canadian Auto Workers union, Local 88.
“It is their signature series for luxury and this reflects very well on our members.”
GM Canada confirmed Tuesday the new Denali Terrain will be made at CAMI.
“It is definitely for CAMI – it will be built there,” said Aria MacKenzie, a GM Canada spokesperson.
“They build a great quality vehicle there and this is the ultimate expression of professional grade.”
A former Saturn plant in Tennessee is being upgraded to also build Terrain vehicles, fueling speculation it may have landed the Denali.
But that’s not the case.
CAMI will continue to build its regular Terrain and Equinox brand CUVs and is busy with that, assembling about 1,150 a day, with another 300 getting final assembly at GM in Oshawa, Van Boekel said.
So busy is the Ingersoll factory, staff are working mandatory overtime every Saturday until year end, Van Boekel said.
“We are six days a week, 24 hours a day here. We are making as many as we can pump out and we are still hiring,” Van Boekel said.
CAMI now employs about 2,700 hourly paid workers, after 40 new workers started this week.
The Terrain is the fourth Denali brand. GM also offers Acadia, Sierra and Yukon Denalis.
