More Canadians plan summer vacations

The era of the staycation may be over, as more than half of Canadians plan to spend $1,300 or more to get away this summer, a new survey found.

In an online poll of more than 1,500 people, 55% said they planned to take a vacation in July or August.

Most of them (74%) plan to take a trip within Canada, while nearly a quarter (24%) plan to visit the U.S. and 9% are heading out of North America. (Some respondents indicated they expect to take more than one trip, causing the totals to add up to more than 100%.)

Albertans have the biggest travel budgets, averaging $2,270, followed closely by British Columbians, with an average of $2,147. Those in Quebec and Atlantic Canada had the lowest budgets in the country, at $1,321 and $1,389 on average, respectively.

The national average vacation budget was $1,700.

The survey was conducted between June 18 and 20 by Leger Marketing on behalf of CIBC. The margin of error is 2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
