TORONTO

The federal government has launched a new international travel website designed to help Canadians make informed decisions.

“Our government is pleased to announce Travel.gc.ca, a newly revamped tool to help Canadians travel smarter and safer,” Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Diane Ablonczy said Friday at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

“For the first time ever, we have brought together in one place information from all government departments to help Canadians be informed before during and after their travels.”

Travel.gc.ca is a one-stop option where travellers can find the information they need to travel safely abroad.

The website has a mobile application called Travel Smart, which allows Canadians anywhere in the world to access Government of Canada information on international travel.

Key travel information can be accessed from anywhere in the world through Twitter, Facebook, RSS feeds and email updates.

Social media channels will provide a venue for travellers to let the government know about their travel-related needs.

“Canadians access Travel.gc.ca and government services from their mobile devices in surprising numbers. The Travel Smart app and social media channels are a natural fit in our age of smartphones,” Ablonczy said, adding Canadians are travelling people.

Last year, Canadians took 59 million trips outside the country.

Travel.gc.ca is managed by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada in collaboration with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Canada Revenue Agency, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Environment Canada, Health Canada, Passport Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, Public Safety Canada and Transport Canada.

The site provides continually updated information on a variety of issues including passports, visas, international driving permits as well as travelling with pets.
