Pickup parked on Mitchell's Bay plunges through ice

Article content

Chatham-Kent OPP are warning motorists to stay off the ice on Mitchell's Bay after a pick-up truck went through the ice into shallow water on Family Day.

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado was parked about 500 metres off-shore while the owner was ice fishing nearby.

No one was injured and the vehicle will be removed at the owner’s expense.

The OPP are cautioning people to check the colour and thickness of ice before venturing out.

At least 20 centimeters of clear blue ice is required for snowmobiles and 30 centimeters or more is needed for most light vehicles. Double this amount if the ice is white or opaque.
