Five escape early morning fire near Simcoe

Smoke alarms are credited with helping a Waterford family escape a dangerous fire early Monday morning.

The alarm went up around 3 a.m. at the home of David and Ana Nagy at 3884 Highway 24 North.

Five people in the house managed to evacuate before the fire began to rage.

Nothing appears to have happened to the house when it is viewed from the road. However, the damage inside is extensive. Norfolk Fire & Rescue has offered an initial estimate of $180,000 damage but David Nagy suspects it will be more than that.

“A lot of the ceilings are down,” he said at the scene Monday around noon. “The firefighters had to pull them down. The fire got into the walls and up into the attic.”

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Whether the house is salvageable or not will depend on a thorough inspection.

In a news release, Norfolk fire chief Terry Dicks said this is a classic example of fire alarms saving lives and preventing injury.

“This fire could have easily had a different outcome for the residents had there not been a working smoke alarm,” Dicks said. “We cannot stress enough the value of working smoke alarms as they provide early warning to escape a potentially deadly fire.”

It took firefighters from Waterford, Teeterville, Delhi and Simcoe nearly an hour to bring the situation under control. The investigation continues.
