E.R. Adams still thrives after 76 years

Loyal customers have helped E.R. Adams Insurance in Delhi thrive for more than 76 years.

“Clients in smaller towns are very loyal and that is very much appreciated,” said Marianne Murphy, owner principal and one of three partners of the brokerage.

There are families with several generations who continue to bring their business to E.R. Adams. Those loyal clients are the key to the company's success, she said.

The company, founded by Bill Adams in 1937, was later taken over by his brother Edward R. Adams, hence the name is being recognized by the Delhi and District Chamber of Commerce with a lifetime achievement award, given to long standing businesses in the community.

“It is wonderful to be recognized,” said Murphy, who noted the business is proud of their roots. “We are happy to still be in Delhi.”

Murphy joined the business in 1975 and became a partner in 1988 while partners Robert Smith and John Kovacs both joined in 1997. Smith became partner in 2001 and Kovacs in 2008.

At one time, insurance for farms was the mainstay of their business, but like many local companies, with the downfall of the tobacco industry business had to change.

“We write all lines of insurance,” said Murphy. “Farm used to be very predominant because of the tobacco industry. We've had to diversify with all other lines of insurance.”

The company has also expanded from its original home on Main Street in Delhi to include a branch in Port Dover in 1992 and a branch in Tillsonburg in 1997. There are 11 employees between the three offices.

The lifetime achievement award will be given out at the Chamber of Commerce's annual general meeting at the Polish Alliance of Canada's hall on May 1.

Tickets are $25 and are available at the Delhi Pharmasave downtown.
