NDP wants RCMP to probe Senate expense scandal

OTTAWA - The NDP has dialed 911 on the Senate expense scandal.

Ontario MP Charlie Angus has written to the RCMP commissioner asking for an investigation into a $90,000 "secret cash payment" the prime minister's ex-chief of staff Nigel Wright gave to Sen. Mike Duffy to help him repay improperly claimed living expenses.

"These actions are not only troubling, but they may violate the very laws that the RCMP is charged with upholding and enforcing," Angus said Monday.

Wright resigned Sunday.

Angus said he still wonders what Prime Minister Stephen Harper knew about the payment.

"There's been nothing under this prime minister's watch that's tied him so closely to such massive ethical scandal," Angus said.

Wright said he never told Harper about the "means" Duffy used for his repayment.

NDP officials suggest the payment may violate the Criminal Code's bribery provisions and the conflict of interest section of the Parliament of Canada Act.
