Delhi's eco-friendly school

Delhi Public School was recently recognized for their efforts in being a more environmentally friendly school as they received a silver Ontario EcoSchool certification.

“The students really do all of the work,” said Sam Mann, the staff adviser of the school's Eco Team. “They deserve all of the credit.”

The Eco Team began their mission to become an EcoSchool at the beginning of the school year by creating several different green initiatives in the school.

They recycle drink pouches, yogurt containers, coffee discs and ink cartridges.

Students initiated a monitor-off program throughout the school and encourage lights to be turned off when no one is inside.

They also helped clean up the playground and plant gardens.

The school was hoping to reach the coveted gold status but missed out by four and a half points, said Mann.

The only Grand Erie school to receive a gold certification was Brantford's Pauline Johnson Collegiate Vocational School. Valley Heights Secondary School lost their gold status this year as the school shifted its focus away from the program.

Last year, there were 10 certified Ontario EcoSchools throughout the board that engaged their students in environmental education. That number has grown to 14, with seven new schools added to the list.

The EcoSchool program focuses on minimizing waste, energy conservation, ecological literacy, school ground greening and environmental stewardship.

The following Norfolk Grand Erie schools received EcoSchool certification:

Silver: Delhi District Secondary School, Delhi Public School, Port Rowan Public School, eeterville Public School

Bronze: Houghton Public School, Langton Public School, Simcoe Composite School
