Mayor Rob Ford dances with church choir

TORONTO

Mayor Rob Ford was caught on camera dancing at a Toronto church on Sunday night.

Video of Ford dancing in front of the congregation at the West Toronto Church of God was posted online.

Along with the video, Twitter and Instagram photos of Ford’s appearance at the Wilson Ave. church quickly led to a flurry of media reports on both sides of the border, including in the New York Daily News.

Ford has been in the media spotlight for weeks now due to his ongoing crack cocaine scandal. He shrugged off the holy hip-shaking on Monday.

“What’s wrong with dancing in a church?” Ford said. “They were opening a new church, I was invited, I went to, I think, four events (Sunday) — getting a lot of support, having a good time.”

Rev. Caleen Howard said Ford was invited to the grand opening ceremony for the church’s expansion project.

“He fit right in and joined in with the celebration,” Howard said.

Howard said Ford’s ongoing controversy is “unfortunate.”

“Poor choices were definitely made but he was very well received,” she said. “Coming into a church environment where we deal with a lot of people with a lot of different issues, it is really more meant to offer some encouragement for them to make decisions.

“The pastors prayed for him last night before he left just to try to encourage him to do the right thing.”

The mayor doesn’t often reference religion but since admitting to using crack in a “drunken stupor” he has referred to a “come-to-Jesus moment.”

In an interview with the CBC’s Peter Mansbridge last month, Ford promised that he would never drink again.

“Finished. I’ve had a come-to-Jesus moment, if you want to call it that,” he said.
