Canada edges Czech Republic, Bieksa loses tooth

Kevin Bieksa sacrificed a tooth, but Canada’s power play came to life Monday in a 4-3 win against the Czech Republic at the world hockey championship.

Washington Capitals winger Joel Ward, Philadelphia Flyers forward Matt Read, Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon scored for Canada.

Bieksa will need some dental work after a forechecking Jan Kovar caught the Vancouver Canucks defenceman with a high stick. Bieksa left a trail of blood on the ice as he left to get stitched up.

Despite the result, Canada was outshot 34-20 by the Czechs.

“We walk away with the win, but our team has a lot of work to do,” Canadian coach Dave Tippett told IIHF.com.

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer, who was in net for Canada’s 3-2 shootout loss to France in the tournament opener, got his first win.

Canada next plays Thursday against Denmark.
