CALGARY - Police made an arrest after an RCMP officer was shot during a traffic stop in Kamloops, B.C., early Wednesday morning.

The RCMP emergency response team made the arrest at 3:30 p.m. local time outside of a residence close to where the shooting took place, RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller said at a late afternoon press conference.

Mueller said they arrested a 36-year-old man who was known to police. Charges haven’t been laid and the man hasn’t been identified.

While police said earlier in the day they were seeking more than one suspect, Mueller wouldn't comment if others were still at large.

The injured officer has been identified as Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud, a 40-year-old father of two with 13 years experience.

Michaud underwent surgery for serious injuries and remains in critical condition but stable condition, Mueller said.

Michaud had stopped the car in the B.C. city ─ about 600 km west of Calgary ─ when "an exchange of gun fire occurred," at about 2:45 a.m., according to police.

A second officer returned fire, police said in a release, before the suspect vehicle fled.

Harbhajan Bains was sleeping in his home nearby when he was startled awake by what he thought was someone banging on his door just before 3 a.m.

"When I looked outside there was a police car and there was somebody down on the roadside," he said.

"It was a lot of banging and it was shots, I couldn't count but it was bang-bang-bang-bang-bang, like that.

"It was more than three (shots)."

Bains said residents were told to stay in their homes as police scoured the scene.

Police spent the day seeking a 1998, four-door, white Chrysler Intrepid with B.C. licence plate AF7 65A.

It is unclear if police are still looking for the car.

Anyone with information is asked to call RCMP at 1-250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
