5 recent terror attacks on Western targets

Here is a list of five recent attacks on Western targets by ISIS- or al-Qaida-linked terrorists:

May 24, 2014 - Jewish Museum shooting (Brussels, Belgium)

Three people were killed when 29-year-old Frenchman Mehdi Nemmouche opened fire at the Jewish Museum in Brussels, Belgium. Nemmouche, who had spent a year in Syria where he became a radicalized Islamist, was caught on camera with the AK-47 assault rifle he used to carry out the shooting. He escaped following the attack, but was arrested in Marseille, France, after customs police found a Kalashnikov assault rifle and revolver in his luggage.

October 2014 - Terror attacks in Ottawa and Montreal

Martin Couture-Rouleau ran down Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent in a Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., parking lot. Couture-Rouleau was inspired by online ISIS propaganda. He fled the scene of his attack, but was shot and killed by police after a high-speed chase.

Just two days later, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was killed in a shooting at Parliament Hill in Ottawa as he stood guard at the National War Monument. The shooter, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, was shot and killed by sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers with the support of Parliament Hill security after he stormed into the Parliament buildings. The RCMP claim to be in possession of a video that shows Zehaf-Bibeau announcing he would act out "in the name of Allah in response to Canadian foreign policy."

October 23, 2014 - New York hatchet attack (Queens, N.Y.)

Zane Thompson attacked four police officers with a metal hatchet at a shopping district in Queens, N.Y., striking one officer in the arm and another in the head. Thompson, who was a self-radicalized convert to Islam, was shot and killed in the attack.

December 15, 2014 - Lindt Cafe hostage siege (Sydney, Australia)

A gunman held 17 staff and customers hostage for more than 16 hours at the Lindt Cafe in Sydney's city centre, and killed two during the siege. A black Islamic flag was displayed in the window of the cafe that read "there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." Man Haron Monis was a self-styled Muslim cleric who had a history of sexual and indecent assault charges, as well as a charge for being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.

January 7, 2015 - Shooting at Charlie Hebdo magazine (Paris, France)/

The Paris office of satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo was attacked by hooded gunmen, killing at least 12 people including the magazine's editor and cartoonist as well as two police officers. Another 20 people were injured in what French President Francois Hollande has called a terrorist attack. Police say three gunmen are responsible.
