STRATFORD, Ont. -- A trial date for Justin Bieber has been set for July but it's possible the pop star may never appear in court.

Bieber's trial on assault and dangerous driving charges was set Monday for July 14 and 15 if necessary. He was not in court.

Bieber was charged after he and Selena Gomez were riding an ATV on a rural property in Perth County. Police said the ATV collided with a paparazzi's minivan and an altercation ensued.

Since then Bieber's lawyer, Brian Greenspan, has been trying to come to a resolution with Crown attorney Mike Murdoch.

If they're able to reach a resolution, it could be brought forward at any time and the trial would no longer be necessary.

A confirmation date was set for May 25 to update the court about whether the case will go to trial. If there's a resolution it could be brought before the court before then.

"We're still hopeful there will be a resolution by May 25 if not earlier," Greenspan said.

Asked if there's a point at which Bieber will appear in court, Greenspan said, "One would assume at one point."

But he said there are other possible legal scenarios.

"The Crown could decide the matter should not be proceeded with and that would not require an appearance by anyone," Greenspan said.
