A major winter storm heading for Southwestern Ontario Tuesday is expected to dump as much as 25 centimetres of snow on some parts of the region.
Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning for St. Thomas and Elgin County, Woodstock and Oxford County, Brantford and Brant County Monday afternoon, saying a deepening low-pressure system from Texas, packing strong winds and heavy and blowing snow , will move in at midday Tuesday and intensify overnight.
“About two to five centimetres can be expected Tuesday afternoon and then 10 to 20 cm during the night,” the warning said. “As the wind shifts early Wednesday to northerly the snow will end.
“Regions near Lake Erie may also experience several hours of freezing rain, especially Tuesday night. If the freezing rain stays to the south of Niagara, then they may see the highest amounts of snow.”
A snowfall warning was issued for London and Middlesex County, Sarnia and Lambton County, Chatham-Kent and Huron and Perth counties.
“Total snowfall amounts of 15 cm expected from Tuesday morning to early Wednesday morning,” with the possibility of rapid accumulations making travel difficult, Environment Canada said.
“There may also be some local blowing snow.”
London has mostly been spared the snow and cold of previous winters. And Sunday saw record-high temperatures here of 14.2 C.
But this week, the region returns to sub-zero temperatures for the rest of the week.
