Delhi photographer Kata Schwartz lives her life by one simple yet poignant philosophy.
“I’m a firm believer that in life if you do good, good will come to you,” she said. “When I get a chance then why not help others right?”
Schwartz was so touched when she heard Delhi native and 22-year-old Amy Brooks had recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer she immediately began planning a charity event.
To help Brooks cover costs associated with her treatment and surgery scheduled for April 27, Schwartz is inviting anyone interested to head to Quance Dam in Delhi April 22 between 1-4 p.m. to receive a professionally-taken and edited photo for a donation to Brooks. Folks young and old – even pets – are welcome to attend.
“Every single penny is going to go towards Amy – I don’t want anything,” said Schwartz, who had never met Brooks until recently. “I want this to be for her and her only.”
Brooks was a popular student during her time at Delhi District Secondary School. She was a dedicated member of the Raider cheer team and returned to coach the squad after graduation in 2012. At the time of her diagnosis in February, Brooks was just a few months from graduating Mohawk College’s protection, security, and investigation program.
A Go Fund Me page dedicated to Brooks had seen over $8,000 accumulated by the start of this week. Donations came from friends, family and some strangers simply moved by Brooks’ story.
As of Monday afternoon, almost 150 people had expressed interest via Facebook in Saturday’s event. Brooks will be on hand to greet supporters and join her friends and family selling ‘Team Amy’ T-shirts for $20 apiece.
“I’m really hoping it will be a good turnout for her, she deserves it,” said Schwartz. “She’s so beautiful and such a sweetheart. It just breaks my heart – nobody should go through this, especially at her age. This is not something she should have to deal with.”
More info on the gathering has been posted through the Kata Schwartz Photography Facebook page at facebook.com/KataSchwartzPhotography/. A rain date is set for April 23.
