Delhi sewage plant an award winner

There’s more to the new sewage treatment plant in Delhi than meets the eye.
The state-of-the-art facility is, in fact, an award-winning feat of engineering.
Norfolk County and its construction partners took on a difficult project several years ago when they set to work building a new sewage treatment plant on Western Avenue.
The project team had a limited amount of land to work with. As well, they had to build the new facility while keeping adequate treatment capacity in place at all times.
The technical challenges were overcome and the transition was seamless. This outcome has attracted the attention of the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA).
Earlier this month, OPWA announced that the new plant in Delhi is their Project of the Year in the category of historic restoration and preservation for projects in the $10- to $50 million range.
“This category gives consideration to preserving the environment while working on replacing the entire facility,” Bob Fields, Norfolk’s manager of environmental services, said this week in an email.
“The challenge with the Delhi wastewater plant was that the property was landlocked and therefore provided a minimal footprint for the engineers and contractors to build the new plant while the old plant was kept in service and meeting the effluent requirements of the Ministry of the Environment.”
The Delhi plant cost nearly $20 million. Norfolk officials will accept the accolade at the the OPWA’s annual Conference & Awards Luncheon in Mississauga Jan. 25.
The OPWA has encouraged Norfolk to bring the Delhi project to the attention of the American Public Works Association’s annual awards program.
