The Long Point Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood warning for the entire Lake Erie shoreline within its jurisdiction.

The Grand River Conservation Authority is also warning of high water levels particularly for the areas downstream of Dunnville Dam, in the village of Port Maitland and along the lakeshore.

Strong winds are expected to cause lake levels to surge Wednesday morning. Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for Wednesday for Southern Ontario including Haldimand and Norfolk. Wind gusts could hit 90 km/h, said the national weather service.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is predicting surge levels will reach 2.3 metres in Port Colborne and 1.75 metres in Long Point. If this happens, some flooding can be expected in low lying areas along the Lake Erie shoreline. Water levels are expected to peak between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Members of the Haldimand County Fire Department will be hand-delivering flood warning notices to residents and businesses in the floodplain as a precautionary measure, said a media release.

“Haldimand County Emergency Services is ready to act and provide assistance to affected residents should flooding occur,” said the release.

People are urged to use caution or simply stay away from the Lake Erie shoreline areas experiencing strong wave action and elevated water levels.

Parents are reminded to keep children and pets away from these areas.

LPRCA and GRCA officials will continue to monitor conditions throughout their respective watersheds.
