Vandal causes thousands of dollars damage

Police would like to rein in a vandal who has caused thousands of dollars in damage to local buildings in recent days.

A building, signs and picnic tables at the Lions baseball complex on Davis Street East in Simcoe were spray-painted with graffiti sometime in the past week.

As a follow-up, a school in Simcoe and a school in Walsh were spray-painted in the early morning hours of Thursday.

Authorities are concerned because the graffiti is extensive, abusive and will cost a lot to remove.

“This isn’t art,” Const. Ed Sanchuk, spokesperson for the Norfolk OPP, said Thursday. “This is graffiti, and it will cost thousands of dollars to remove. This has to stop.”

St. Joseph’s School in Simcoe was hit Thursday, as was Walsh Public School. Sanchuk has been told it could cost as much as $10,000 to clean up both schools. The cost of the clean-up at Lions Park has been pegged at $3,500.

Police believe the same person is responsible for all three incidents. Each scene features the repeated spraying of the letters “EGS” or a variation of that. Police believe this stands for Easy Ghost Squad, a reference to a video game.

“If mom, dad or any teacher are aware of anyone who’s into doodling `EGS,’ please contact the police,” Sanchuk said. “This has to stop. Someone has to know where this is coming from.”

Anyone with information related to this damage is asked to contact the Norfolk OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers of Haldimand and Norfolk at 1-800-222-8477.

Callers to Crime Stoppers who held solve a crime are eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
