Jail term for drug dealer

Article content

A Brampton man, one of six people charged in a huge Simcoe drug bust last May, was sentenced to more than a year in jail on top of the year he has already served.

Kurt Barnett, 24, pleaded guilty in Ontario Court to possession of drugs for trafficking and failing to keep his probation orders.

Barnett was one of three men and three women who were arrested after the Norfolk County Street Crime Unit and the OPP's Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant at a Queensway West house in Simcoe.

There police found $30,000 worth of cocaine, fentanyl and marijuana, plus $2,000 in suspected drug money.

Four people, including Barnett, were charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime.

In Ontario Court recently, Barnett pleaded guilty and was credited with the equivalent of 438 days of time already served and ordered to serve a further 462 days. He must provide a sample of his DNA for the national offenders databank and pay $600 in victim surcharge fines.

Barnett is also under orders to not own or use weapons for the rest of his life.

The money and drugs seized during his arrest are forfeited.
