A history of popular sandwiches

Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite at the office or lounging on a picnic blanket, sandwiches top the list of food choices for foodies worldwide.

The handy meal – or at least, its name – was born in 1762 when John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, is said to have asked servants for cuts of beef between slices of bread so that he could eat while continuing to play cards. Other reports say the Earl wanted something quick to eat while working at his desk.

With 2012 marking the 250th anniversary of the fast-food, we take a look at some of the world’s most popular sandwiches.
