Financial adviser accused of mail bombing client

INNISFAIL, Alta. -- Investigation into the bombing murder of paraplegic single mom Vicky Shachtay continues, but police are confident they have the man responsible.

Brian Malley, 55, was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder following a raid on a home in this small town some 120 km north of Calgary.

Shachtay, 23, was killed last November after opening an explosive package left on her doorstep.

Malley was Shachtay's financial adviser, and Monday police confirmed he was also a police officer for a short time decades ago, for a municipal police force in Alberta.

Shachtay had been confined to a wheelchair since a 2004 car crash.

Malley handled money she received from a settlement from that crash, family told QMI Agency on Sunday.

Speaking to media Monday, family members expressed relief at this turn in the six-month investigation.

Sarah Shachtay, the victim's sister, said she was not surprised to learn Malley is the man police suspect of her sister's murder.

But she and her father, Victor Shachtay, said this development is of no comfort, having someone so close being suspected.

No other suspects are currently being sought, police said Monday.
