Q: Our grandson is interested in marine life. We will be joining him and his parents on a visit to Quebec's Eastern Townships and Vermont. Do you know of anywhere nearby to explore turtles, frogs, fish, etc?

-- J. Beattie, Scarborough

A: Both places have marine attactions. In Quebec, the Granby Zoo opened a new Oceania pavilion last summer. The permanent exhibit has 12 aquariums and focuses on the waters and islands of the South Pacific. Highlights include a massive octopus and slippery sting rays in an open touch tank. The kids will also enjoy seeing endangered green sea turtles, hogfish, jellyfish, loads of other tropical fish and local reptiles. The climate-controlled facility is open year-round. Visit zoodegranby.com.

In Burlington, Vt., ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center has 70 species of fish, amphibians, bugs and reptiles and over 100 interactive experiences daily. Highlights include huge sturgeons from Lake Champlain and exhibits on the ecological, geological and biological history of the Lake Champlain Basin. There are multimedia displays such as the awesome Forces Theater and a hands-on water-play space where children can build dams and float boats. An Atlantic tide pool touch-tank houses periwinkle snails, horseshoe crabs, sea stars, anemones and urchins. ECHO is open year-round. See echovermont.org.
