CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll is getting a $250 million investment and job security for its 3,000 workers.

GM Canada announced cash for a new body shop to support future production, meaning the assembly plant is getting the next generation of Equinox and Terrain vehicles.

"It is fantastic news, it reflects on our membership, we got this thanks to their work," said Mike Van Boekel, chairperson of Canadian Auto Workers Local 88.

With CAMI landing the next generation of vehicles, believed to be a redesigned Terrain and Equinox, it means they will have the work for at least seven years, the life span of a new vehicle, added Van Boekel.

Construction on the new body shop is expected to start soon.

GM has been making about 150 Equinox vehicles a day at its Spring Hill, Tenn, plant and there was concern among some workers production would be moved there, but this news means Cami has won the work.

“Conversion of the CAMI Assembly plant to a flexible manufacturing facility will provide CAMI with the ability to produce multiple global architectures and body styles,” Kevin Williams, president and managing director, General Motors of Canada, said in a statement.

“We have had a strong start to 2013 with customer demand for our newest vehicles driving improved sales,” added Williams, “This is strong confirmation that our investing in manufacturing flexibility, finding ways to bring new products to market faster, is the right strategy.”

Of the approximate 3,000 workers at CAMI, about 2,600 are CAW and the balance is salaried staff.
