Baked goods now offered at Wholesome Pickins

The locally grown fruits you are used to buying at Wholesome Pickins Market are now available in freshly baked pies.

Wholesome Pickins officially opened the doors of their new bakery a month ago and have been pumping out pies, cookies and muffins for hungry customers ever since.

“We carry all kinds of products form Norfolk County. It just made sense to be able to offer the local produce in baked goods as well,” said Jenn VanDeVelde, who owns and operates Wholesome Pickins with her husband, David. “It is always something I wanted to do.”

Wholesome Pickins first opened their market in 2010. The marketplace was recently renovated, which allowed enough room to make VanDeVelde's dream a reality.

In the past, pastries and baked goods from Harmony Pastry Shop and Cafe were sold in the market.

“I think people were used to being able to get (baked goods) here but now they are thrilled that it is ours and you can spell the fresh baked pies when you come in,” said VanDeVelde.

All of the baked goods are prepared by her husband's aunt fresh every day.

The bakery and market hopes to expand into making grab and go items such as veggies with dip, salads and wraps – all made from Norfolk produce.

“We've got a good handle on the day to day baking so now we're looking to expand,” said VanDeVelde.

The bakery will stay open until Thanksgiving but will also take orders for Christmas baking and will reopen in the spring.
