Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath skirts criticism from party members, slams Liberals

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath didn't respond directly to 34 high-profile NDP members who say they are seriously considering not voting for her in the upcoming election.

In a letter obtained by media outlets, the group accused Horwath of pushing the party "to the right of the Liberals in an attempt to win Conservative votes."

"Well, you know what? The great thing about our party is that it is very democratic and people have a right to voice their opinions," Horwath said while on the hustings in Windsor, Ont., Saturday.

"But, what I can tell you for sure is that the people of this province are tired of a corrupt Liberal government. There is no doubt I had a difficult decision to make a couple weeks ago when I decided to not support the budget.

"But, look, if there is one straightforward, upfront job that progressives have, it's to shut down corruption and get rid of the kind of behaviour that we have seen from the Liberal government."

Horwath said the Liberals don't deserve to be re-elected and PC Leader Tim Hudak's plan to lay off 100,000 public-sector employees when so many people are looking for work doesn't make sense.

"My plan is the only one that respects the priorities of middle-class families and will deliver results," she said.
