SWA competes at Regionals, Festivals

February was a busy month for South Western Aquatics' younger competitive swimmers.
Tillsonburg's Zoey Papadakos, 13, qualified for both the Swim Ontario Winter Short Course Festivals, Feb. 20-21 in Markham, and Western Region Short Course Championships in Brantford, Feb. 26-28, but was sick and unable to attend Regionals.
"I did good (at Festivals)," said Papadakos. "I didn't make any best times, but I got pretty close to the same times I had. My best one was probably my 200 fly – it felt like my best swim."
Next up for Papadakos is long course.
"I'm actually better at short course," she said, but her preference is longer races.
"I'd say I'm better at the long distances... 200m is the longest for fly."
SWA teammate Arden Tedford, 12, from Courtland, competed at the Festivals and Regionals, highlighted by first and second-place finishes (200m and 100m breaststroke) in Markham.
"At Festivals I did okay, I was kind of sick that weekend," said Tedford after her first Festivals, "but I still took off a little bit of time in my 200m IM and 100m breaststroke."
While breaststroke continues to be Tedford's best stroke, she's working to improve it.
"I'm trying to my improve my arms and get my streamlines. That's pretty much it because my kick is the best part of my breaststroke."
Tedford would like to qualify for Age Group Provincials in the long course season.
"And I'm aiming for Nationals."
Tillsonburg's Rebecca Pittock, 10, swam in seven timed events at Regionals, finishing fourth in most of her heats.
"In one I got fifth," said Pittock, who prefers the freestyle stroke and was able to take 2.86 off her 200m freestyle time.
"I just sort have an off race for freestyle sometimes."
Her goal, now that she's competed at three Regionals, is Festival times.
"I'm five seconds off in my IM. That's what I'm aiming for in long course. I think I can do it this year."
