Outdoor Trails: Sighting in a high-powered rifle scope

We’ve come through a very dry spring and summer season. Most watersheds are extremely low, as is the groundwater table. Many rural wells have gone dry and water must be brought in. But the ruffed grouse (slangily called partridge by many Northerners) is a bit higher, as birds like warm and dry, which this year was. The most productive grouse hunting will occur in a few weeks after the leaf drop, so the best it yet to come.

Outdoor Trails: Lots of mid-summer activity

Usually in August, there are not nearly as many flies to contend with and from what I can see, this population drop is already occurring, but you will still need insect control if going remote, near water, especially dusk and dawn time frames. There are still lots of those small, ankle-biting stable flies, especially if out in a boat. Rather than use insect repellent, I prefer to give everyone on board a simple fly swatter.
