Churchill back in business

A cargo to Italy is the first in four years

Article content

The first grain shipment in four years has left the port of Churchill, bound for Italy.

It is probably carrying durum wheat and lentils, but port owners are not commenting.

Arctic Gateway said on social media that the shipment is “a really important first step in re-establishing the Port of Churchill as an important part of Canada’s position as an agricultural export leader in the world.”

Arctic Gateway revived the port after Omni Trax failed to deliver on its promises when it owned the port and rail link to the port.

The rail link, which required extensive and expensive repairs, also serves as an important transportation service for residents around James Bay.
