Three to See Thursday: Zachary Ayotte, Mad Bombers and Footloose

Article content

Zachary Ayotte artist talk: This Edmonton photographer’s new work engages in remembrance and rethinking of the gradual disappearance of queer spaces in our city. His show BAMF, according to Latitude 53’s site, “is a series of human-scale images of bodies slipping into the ether, realized as black-and-white photographs. As they vanish, they leave behind trails of dust, the black air closing in and swallowing the spaces they leave behind. Ayotte is interested in the relationship of the physical — bodies and the spaces they inhabit — to our conceptual and political landscapes. When these places don’t stay open, how do they live on, and how do they inform our other approaches to community?” Activist Ted Kerr asks the questions.

Mad Bomber Society: The unstoppable monster energy of Edmonton’s six-piece ska legends is back onstage. Better prepare for table dancing, so bring your favourite plastic sippy cup! For more than 20 years these bouncing madmen have played music guaranteed to make you smile, while still having enough of a social conscience to simultaneously activate your brain. Surf rock experts the Tsunami Brothers open up, and, dig this, the show is free — what were they thinking! You should be able to hear this one even a few blocks away at the legislature, so get ready for a hell of a night.

Footloose (1984): You know the old story: A city teenager moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace. Said teenager subsequently ends up getting bit parts for the rest of his career, spawning a six-degrees game in his name that proves, like everyone in the Star Wars universe, we’re all completely connected, from Leonard Nimoy to Orson Welles. And, P.S., this is intended to be a dance party, so bring your sippy cup so you don’t spill booze all over the place. What? I’m really into sippy cups today, what’s the big deal?
