In a pre-taped sketch, which aired on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday night, Billy and James were filmed discussing whether talk show hosts ever fake enthusiasm for their guests.

Accordingly, the chat then turned into a spoof of the “faking it” scene set at Katz’s Delicatessen in Manhattan in Rob Reiner’s 1989 classic, in which Meg Ryan plays Sally and Billy portrays Harry.

“Some guests, frankly they think they’re way more interesting than they really are,” said James, to which his pal assured, “You don’t have to worry about me, talk show hosts love having me on as a guest.”

“Oh, that’s right. I forgot,” the British presenter added. “You’re in iconic movies. I’m just saying, most actors from beloved films are sure it’s never happened to them and most talk show hosts at one time or another have done it, so you do the math.”

Billy then asserted that he would know if someone was just pretending to laugh at his jokes, and on cue, James began to laugh, loudly bang the table, and audibly praise the actor, with the other diners in the room all turning to look at them.

Seemingly convinced by James’ ability to fake enthusiasm, Billy sighed.

And to top off the scenario, former talk show host Jay Leno made a cameo appearance at the end to reference a humorous line from the original film, and told a passing waiter, “Yeah, I’ll have what he’s having!”

Elsewhere on the late-night show, Billy spoke about the recent confirmation by the organizers of the 2019 Academy Awards that the upcoming event wouldn’t have a host. He explained that no one contacted him over the gig, which he had hosted nine times between 1990 and 2012, but was confident the ceremony would go smoothly.

“They have very creative producers, I know some really funny people who are doing it,” the 70-year-old insisted. “I think it can work great, though I do like the fact that when I was there, or Ellen (DeGeneres), or any other successful hosts, that you’re there to comment on something that happens. Because when you’re the host, you want something bad to happen!”
