2019 Walk for Alzheimer’s

Article content

On Sunday, June 9, there was music, food, white and blue t-shirts and plenty of caring people at the Espanola Mall, all to raise awareness for the Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin.
IG Wealth Management is the title sponsor for the annual Walk for Alzheimer’s fundraiser.
“IG Wealth Management has a long heritage of community involvement, corporate funding and project initiation that has created a strong corporate culture of caring.”
Money raised goes to Alzheimer research, provides services and support to people with dementia and their caregivers, and goes towards educating the public about the disease that robs people of their memories, dignity and eventually their lives.
To date, the Ontario ‘Walk for Alzheimer’s’ has raised $1,250,876. Walks are held all over the province throughout the year and local Alzheimer Society chapters can schedule when and where their walk takes place. All funds raised in a community, mostly online, stay within that community.
Wendy Ashton, Espanola Alzheimer’s Society chapter leader, reached out to the Royal Bank of Canada in Espanola for a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society and Team RBC members decided to help as volunteers on Sunday at the mall for the ‘Walk’. Volunteering at various community events is part of RBC’s community outreach incentive. Although Ashton couldn’t be at the event on Sunday, there were plenty of volunteers on hand including Espanola’s Mayor Jill Beer.
Local band, ‘Second Avenue’ entertained and kept the walkers motivated for two hours and provided great music for anyone shopping on Sunday.
“Alzheimer’s disease is not an illness we can ignore. It has an overwhelming impact on the people who develop it, and the families who care for them.”
According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, there are 500,000 Canadians living with some form of dementia and that number will skyrocket to 937,000 by the year 2031.
