Over those years they have managed to raise at least $400,000. A report by Rainbow Schools stated that in 2016 then principal Michael Bellrose spoke about the Terry Fox Run saying that over 33 years the school had managed to raise $392,298 for cancer research. The school has consistently ranked among the top 50 Terry Fox fundraisers in Ontario at the elementary level.

Edith Presseau, coordinator for the run, said in May of this year the students raised their target total of $5,000, so this fall they decided to do something a little different.

The Terry Fox student committee came up with the idea of a ‘Toonie for Terry’. Rather than have pledges they asked the students to come in with toonies and try tossing them into a bucket. Those students who landed their toonies in the bucket become members of ‘Terry’s Team’ and will be eligible to play a basketball game against the teachers at a later date.

Presseau said the toonie toss, which was a lot of fun, raised $167.25.

The run took place on Thursday, Sept. 26 close to 11:30 a.m. with the older students leading the way. Approximately, 250 people, including teachers, were part of the walk.

Before the walk, the participants watched a Terry Fox video. Presseau said the school is proud to carry on Fox’s legacy to try and find a cure for cancer.

The participants went down Avery Drive to the ballfields on the Queensway, then up Mead Blvd., back to the school. The younger children turned from Avery Drive onto Hunter and then down Mead Blvd. to return to the school. Jarrod, one of the youngsters that took the shorter route, said they had to go around the same route twice.

“Boy, my legs were tired.”
