The sun shone on hundreds of costumed children and their parents Saturday afternoon at the 12th annual Scare in the Square.

With yellow loot bags in hand provided by the Downtown Brantford BIA, youngsters went throughout the downtown to trick-or-treat at about 30 participating merchants and businesses, before returning to Harmony Square.

“It gets kids in the spirit of Halloween,” said Sofia DaSilva, brand ambassador for Brant Taxi, one of the event sponsors.

“It’s an awesome turnout, and the kids look great,” DaSilva remarked as she helped youngsters choose from among buckets of sweet treats.

An array of activities was available at Harmony Square, including pumpkin carving, a make-your-own slime station, costume contest, dog parade and hayride. The square itself was decorated with painted and carved pumpkins and a variety of scarecrows.

Kristen Cormier, community events co-ordinator for Brantford parks-recreation, said an “amazing crowd” turned out for the event’s opening on Friday night.

This year, Scare in the Square events expanded outside of the downtown to include a ghost hunt at the former Brantford police station on Greenwich Street, and a haunted pavilion and zombie survival run through the forest at Mohawk Park.

Dustin Lampman and Mandie Lindquist brought their three-year-old son Bentley, dressed as The Grinch, and fifteen-month-old Baylee as Cindy Lou Who.

“We come every year, especially for the costume competition,” Lindquist said.

“It’s a great way to have fun, express creativity, and it’s nice to do it before the cold weather hits.”
