Norfolk OPP is urging people to stop calling the emergency line to report a barking dog. The police respond to multiple calls a year regarding noisy canines, OPP said in a media release.

Instead, people need to turn to the county’s bylaw department.

Norfolk County By-Law Department has a form called the “Barking Dog Evidence Package” which needs to be filled out to properly submit a complaint.

“This is an easy and effective way to make an official complaint regarding a barking dog in your community located in Norfolk,”  Inspector Joseph Varga, Norfolk County OPP, said in the press release.

The county has received 14 complaints to date this year. The office received 53 complaints in 2015, 46 in 2016, 39 in 2017, and 41 in 2018.

The evidence package must be filled out listing a minimum of five days that the dog has been disruptive.

There are rules for the form including that the complainant must be able to see the dog barking, must include the start and stop time of the sounds, and must explain how the noise was disturbing.

Once completed, the form can be dropped off to bylaw department offices in Simcoe or Langton.

The form is available on the Norfolk County website.
