Darryl Lee, the city’s chief administrative officer, announced Wednesday that he will be retiring effective July 3.

“This is certainly a bittersweet decision for me,” Lee said in a statement.

“I’m so proud of the amazing work that is being done at the city now and see great promise under the leadership of the new term of council.

“This is a family decision that has been our plan for quite some time.”

Lee said he and his wife, Diane, are looking forward to travelling, spending more time with family and friends and pursuing other hobbies and interests.

He took over the city’s top administrative position in October 2016 following the retirement of Geoff Rae.

Lee began working for the city in 2003 and held various positions, including director of clerk’s services, city clerk. He was promoted to general manager of corporate services in 2011.

Prior to join the city, Lee worked for the City of Hamilton for 11 years.

The CAO is the city’s senior executive manger overseeing all city commissions and departments, including more than 1,300 employees.

“While I’m sorry to see Darryl leave the city later this year, I know we are in a stronger position because of his leadership,” Mayor Kevin Davis said.

“I’m happy for Darryl and his family and look forward to his support in planning for a smooth transition of his role over the next six months.”
