A 23-year-old Chatham man is charged after a police cruiser was damaged.

Chatham-Kent police responded to a disturbance at a Chatham home on Monday afternoon where officers encountered a man with a four-by-four piece of wood approximately six- to seven-feet long.

An officer ordered the man to drop the piece of wood, but he refused and ran toward the officer, smashing the piece of wood into the front windshield of a police cruiser.

Police said the man fled back into the house, using a family member as a human shield against police.

Officers were able to safely separate the pair and the accused was arrested and taken into custody pending a bail hearing, police said.

The accused is charged with weapons dangerous, assault police and mischief over $5,000.
