Davis underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove his right kidney. In a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday the mayor is seen giving a thumbs up from his hospital bed and telling viewers his surgery went well and there were no complications.

Davis announced at the annual kidney walk last month that he was recently diagnosed with Stage 1 renal cell carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer.

Davis said the cancer was detected in July through an MRI for an unrelated lower back issue.

The mayor will remain in hospital for three days, followed by a three- to six-week recovery period at home. He is not expected to undergo any other treatment and his prognosis is excellent, said Maria Visocchi, the city’s director of communication.

Davis, he said he and his wife, Lisa, are thankful for all the well wishes they’ve received.

During Davis’s absence, Coun. John Utley will be mayor designate.
