Rogers recently served notice that it intends to build a 98-foot communications tower at 527 Norfolk St. S. This is close to the proposed location of another tower on county property at 591 Norfolk St. S.

“Does Rogers know a tower is going up on county property about 150 metres away?” Charlotteville Coun. Chris VanPaassen asked at Tuesday’s meeting of Norfolk council.

“Maybe someone should let them know. We don’t want these popping up all over the place.”

Industry Canada is responsible for green-lighting communications towers. Municipalities are alerted to applications in order to provide input and as a courtesy. However, municipalities ultimately have no say over the outcome.

Jason Godby, Norfolk’s interim general manager of public works, says co-location of Rogers’ equipment will be possible on the tower at 591 Norfolk Street South.

But Godby added the county can only share that information and make suggestions. In the end, the decision is between the cell-phone provider and the federal government.

Norfolk staff was directed to alert Rogers to the opportunity to double up at a nearby location and thereby reduce blight on the urban landscape of Simcoe.
