Councillors urge PM to work with other parties

City councillors are hoping everyone gets along in Ottawa following the federal election on Monday.
Councillors passed a resolution on Tuesday urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “work co-operatively with all opposition parties in the House of Commons to meet the needs of all Canadians in all regions of the country.”
Trudeau was returned to power with a mandate to lead a minority government.
“Some of the best governments have been minority governments,” said Coun. Dan McCreary. “They can do an awful lot for Canadians.”
Noting the feeling of alienation in Saskatchewan and Alberta where there was a Conservative sweep, McCreary called for “some national unity.”
Coun. Richard Carpenter, commenting on the possible early toppling of a minority government, said he’d like to see the Liberals lead for a full four-year term.
“I think we should make four-year terms mandatory. Minority governments can work well. It’s doable.”
Councillors also recognized Conservative MP Phil McColeman, who was re-elected to his fourth term representing Brantford-Brant, and thanked all the local candidates for running and volunteers who worked on their election campaigns.
