Norfolk’s Jaxson Zurby will be playing in a Top Prospects football game in June.

Zurby, a Grade 10 student at Delhi District Secondary School, is one of 73 Canadians selected to play at Ottawa’s TD Place Stadium in the Canadian Football Chat (CFC) TSN prospect game.

CFL legends and CFL on TSN panelists Henry Burris and Matt Dunigan will serve as head coaches for the game.

Zurby will be one of the players on the team coached by Dunigan.

“It should be really fun. I’ve seen him on TSN,” said Zurby.

When he isn’t playing for the Raiders, he plays in Woodstock for the Wolverines.

The tryouts for the team were invitation only, and his coach from Woodstock nominated Zurby for a spot.

Chris Camboia, head coach for the Wolverines, has been coaching Zurby for about four years.

“He’s on a trajectory to be a Division 1 athlete for sure,” said Camboia. “That’s a big deal in the sense that if you can have your school paid for because of your hard work and abilities in the classroom and on the field that is a big thing for a family to celebrate.”

Camboia spoke of Zurby’s physical presence, hard work, and his athleticism.

“When he’s on offense he’s a nightmare for the defence because even when he’s covered he’s open because of his speed, he has exceptional speed,” said Camboia.

Invitations to five tryouts held in March were sent to the top 200 players in Canada. From those tryouts the final 73 were selected.

“I’m really excited. It’s really good because I’ve been working hard at football for a long time,” said Zurby. “It’s good to get rewarded for it. I’m super excited.”

He originally went to tryouts as a quarterback, but has been converted to a wide receiver.

Canadian Football Chat (CFC) and TSN partnered for the first-ever CFC Prospect Game being held on June 1.

The TSN broadcast team for the game will feature play-by-play commentator Farhan Lalji and analyst Duane Forde.

“As Canada’s home of football, we’re very excited to partner with CFC on this new showcase game,” Paul Graham, vice-president and executive producer, live events, TSN said in a press release about the event. “This game will introduce a national audience to a group of homegrown young players who could soon be starring in TSN’s exclusive live coverage of the CFL.”

Zurby will be attending football camps at universities in the United States this summer, which will lead to exposure to many schools.

“He’s a model student, model athlete, and any division one school is going to be very fortunate to have him,” said Camboia.

Zurby’s favourite part of football is simple.

“I like scoring touchdowns.”

The game involving Zurby and the rest of the 73 Canadian high school students will be airing on TSN on June 2 at 12 p.m.
