Norfolk OPP say the 25-year-old Norfolk man engaged in sexual acts during a video chat with an unknown female, who had contacted him online.

He was later contacted and told the incidents had been recorded. If he didn’t pay up the videos would be sent to his family members, social media contacts and to social media sites.

He didn’t pay so the suspect then sent the videos to the man’s family members.

The man contacted police on May 26 to report the incident.

The case has prompted Norfolk OPP to once again remind the public to be careful when sharing material or engaging with people online.

“Police are urging all computer users to be aware of the dangers of engaging in online web chats where explicit conversations and photographs are shared. Once it’s out there, you can’t get it back,” said Inspector Joseph Varga, detachment commander for the Norfolk County OPP.

“We live in a connected world where it’s easy to feel as if our far-away friends are right next door. Having a face-to-face conversation with someone is gaining in popularity and everyone needs to be vigilant when engaging in online video chats,” said OPP Const. Ed Sanchuk.

Video chatting allows you to see the person you are chatting with, but they also see you – and can record you as well.

“The fact that your face is right there for all to see, but it’s not just your face that’s on show. Anything else can be, too. That means that some behaviour — and some body parts — that you don’t want to exhibit could end up on display,” said the release.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or leave an anonymous online message at www.helpsolvecrime.com.
