“It was a little unexpected,” Amilia said about having the New Year’s Baby. “We’re very happy, excited, and glad that she’s here safe.”

Because it was a Caesarean-section birth scheduled for Jan. 2 the couple was not sure if they were going to have the New Year’s Baby.

Ruby has an older brother, Henry, who is almost two.

“We’re really excited to introduce her to her big brother,” Amilia said on the phone as Henry was on his way to meet her. “We’re anxious for his arrival.”

The name Ruby is inspired by Amilia’s sister’s birthstone and the story of the Wizard of Oz.

Amilia, an employee with Haldimand County Library and Andrew, a Stelco employee, formally thanked physicians Dr. Brian Ferguson, Dr. John Evans and Dr. David Roukema, as well as nurses Andrea Holden, Pat Phillips, Ruth Driedger, Janice Snively, Felicia Davies and RT Angie Miller.

The NGH Board of Directors marked the occasion by presenting Ruby with an engraved horse carousel bank. Ruby also received a baby blanket from the Volunteer Association to Norfolk General Hospital and Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home Knitters group.
