Sandy Jackson, Brantford’s general manager of community parks and recreation, said the GRCA plans to remove a number of trees and obstructions in the Gilkison Flats area into the winter.

“Postponing the trail paving until after the GRCA work is completed will avoid potential damage to the newly restored trail,” said Jackson. “Some sections of the trail are very close to the river bank and consideration for trail realignment in these areas will be given to mitigate the potential for erosion and damage related to future flood events.”

In the interim, the trail remains open with a granular surface.

Jackson said the city will continue working with the GRCA with a goal of completing the paving next summer for use in the fall.

Other flood-related infrastructure projects that have been completed in and around the Grand River include:

• Rip rap slab repairs at Rivergreen Park done by the GRCA.

• Structural repairs done by GRCA to Ballantyne floodwall.

• The acquisition of property is in progress by the city for work to be done on the dike.

• Work is underway by city staff to close two dike gaps – one north of the Lorne Bridge and the second south of the civic centre. It’s expected to be done by the end of the year.

• Bridge structural investigations have been done by the city and Ministry of Transportation and future work is being analyzed by the city.
