The 100 Women Who Care Norfolk group has donated a special wheelchair accessible golf cart to the South Coast Special Needs Kids.

The cart has a seat that functions similarly to a motorized wheelchair. It has waist and chest straps, which can be used to help hold the golfer in place. The seat spins the golfer towards their ball and helps them stand in an almost upright position, giving them full range to swing their clubs.

This is the second cart that South Coast has available at the Springview Farm Golf Course in Waterford.

“We already had one but people golf in pairs,” said Scott Chambers, a board member of South Coast Special Needs Kids.

The 100 Women committee contacted Chambers, asking if a donation could be made towards a second cart.

Chambers said he believes these are the only two carts of their kind in Haldimand and Norfolk.

The carts, which can be used by all ages, are used on Wednesday nights by the South Coast kids, but they are hoping the community will take advantage of them at other points throughout the week.

“We want them to be used by more people,” said Chambers.

The carts that were previously available only had a spinning seat, without the standing function.

“The previous carts made it tough for the athletes because the club can’t clear your knees,” said South Coast member Ron Guthrie. “This cart allows anyone that can’t use their legs to get up to almost a standing position. It allows them to hit the ball without worrying about hitting their knees.”

“The purchase of this unique golf cart will ensure these very special young people experience an opportunity which the rest of us take for granted,” said Kathy Caskenette, a member of the 100 Women Who Care Norfolk.

Anyone seeking to use the cart should ask for Tracey or Shelley Boerkamp when they contact the court and they will make sure the cart is available for you to tee off.
