“We’re looking at upwards of 150 teams this year,” said Sandy Lee, manager of community giving for the association’s southern Ontario district. “We have teams coming here from across Canada, the United States and even the Cayman Islands.

“So, it should be another good year for the tournament.”

The tournament’s 13th edition will be held May 31 to June 2 at the Ball Hockey International facility at the Steve Brown Sports Complex at Lions Park on Edge Street.

In recent years, the tournament has attracted between 130 and 135 teams in divisions from youth to adults. Back in 2010, the tournament attracted 205 teams and 2,096 players and set a Guinness World Record for the largest street hockey tournament. The record was eclipsed in 2013.

The Walter Gretzky tournament is billed as a fun weekend, offering lots of competition. Proceeds go towards lung health research.

“We took over the tournament eight years ago and, in that time, we’ve raised $200,000 for much-needed lung research,” Lee said. “This year, we’re hoping to raise another $25,000.”

The opening ceremonies will take place June 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Taking part will be Walter Gretzky, Brantford Town Crier Dave McKee and local dignitaries.
