Help available for isolated seniors

Assistance just a phone call away

Haldimand and Norfolk Health and Social Services and its community partners have teamed up to assist vulnerable seniors who are house-bound during this time of social distancing. They want to hear from any senior 70 years of age and older who needs vital supplies such as food and other essentials delivered to their doorstep.

Church Out Serving has partnered with Kaley’s Restaurant in Simcoe and Haldimand and Norfolk Health and Social Services to help seniors during this time of self-isolation and social distancing.

All parties want house-bound seniors 70 years of age and older in Norfolk and Haldimand to know help is available to obtain essential supplies should they need it.

“This may include delivery of prepared meals or a list of essential items needed from the grocery store,” a health and social services news release said Wednesday.

“A second phase of service will be in support of local food banks in Haldimand and Norfolk and may include the delivery of a food box if food banks become unable to meet the demands of their users.”

Health and Social Services has taken this step to ensure vulnerable seniors are not forced to leave their homes at a time when they need to shelter from the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The potentially-fatal pathogen is taking a toll on the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

“The program is meant to make it easier for residents – particularly seniors – to avoid contact with each other and remain in self-isolation,” the news release say.

Accessing the service is simple.

Those in Norfolk over 70 years of age, those with accessibility issues, and those under self-isolation who don’t have a readily-available support network can learn more by dialling 519-426-6170.

In Haldimand, the number to dial is 905-318-6623, extension 3793.

Volunteers are needed to assist with deliveries. Those interested in helping are encouraged to sign up on the internet at https://hnhu.org/covidvolunteers / .
