On Feb. 27 at the Allan and Jean Millar Centre, students Grade 6-7 students from Ecole St. Joseph and Percy Baxter will be competing in a number of Minute to Win It games organized by students from the Youth Advisory Committee.

The goal behind the events is to give students an opportunity to compete on teams mixed of students from both schools to “allow new friendships to be made.”

“Normally within the schools, they compete against each other and there’s always that rivalry,” said Whitecourt Mayor Maryann Chichak. “They’re trying to break that and get the competition there, but a friendly competition.”

The Youth Advisory Committee created the idea of the interschool games last April when they participated in their own strategic planning session.

“Hats off to the youth committee for taking that initiation,” said Chichak. “I’m really excited for Feb. 27 to go and watch … hopefully it’s a success and we can plan further events in the future to show that collaboration among the schools.”

Should the event be a success, in the future the youth committee may expand the grades to involve more students to create an even greater interaction among the schools.
