Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, police said officers responded to a call from a resident who said a man had thrown a knife at him while he was walking behind a business.

While the resident was not struck by the knife and was able to leave the scene without any further issues, police found a suspect holding a knife behind the business where the incident allegedly occurred.

After police made several requests, the suspect placed the knife on the ground but, as police attempted to arrest him, he allegedly pulled away and climbed onto a nearby picnic table.

The suspect then allegedly picked up a laptop computer from the table and struck an officer over the head. The officer was not injured and the man was arrested.

Following the arrest, officers found a variety of home electronics and a wallet. Police allege their suspect had entered a residence while the occupant was napping and had stolen the property found by police.

Stratford police charged the man with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstructing police, assaulting police with intent to resist, break and enter, and breach of probation.

The man was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 23.
