Man calls cab to escape police

Passenger in fleeing car faces drug charges; driver still wanted

Police have charged one individual and are looking for a second after a chase in Markstay-Warren.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nipissing West (Sudbury) OPP attempted to stop an eastbound driver for speeding on Highway 17, according to a release.

“Upon seeing the police vehicle turn around, the driver immediately crossed into the oncoming lane and attempted to turn onto Sunset Road in order to evade police,” the OPP said. “The fleeing vehicle subsequently crashed in the ditch and struck a hydro pole.”

The driver took off on foot while three passengers, all uninjured, remained at the scene. 

The OPP canine unit and Emergency Response Team were deployed to track down the fleeing suspect. 

During the search, officers located and seized suspected purple heroin and cocaine, with an estimated street value of $26,600.

“While investigating, officers learned that the fleeing suspect had attended a nearby residence where he asked the homeowners to call a taxi and he was picked up,” police said.

One passenger faces several charges.

Riley Sanscartier, 22, of Mattawa, was charged with the obstructing a peace officer, failing to comply with a probation order and possession of cocaine and heroin for the purpose of trafficking.

He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on Dec. 18.

The identity of the fleeing driver is known and an arrest warrant has been issued, the OPP said. Police did not release the name of the suspect.
