The owner of a Cannifton variety store is in serious, but stable, condition following surgery after a violent robbery Wednesday evening.
A photo shows at least one of the intruders was in Ro’s General Store at 6:43 p.m. wearing sunglasses and a red bandana covering his mouth and nose area.
A caller to The Intelligencer newsroom identified himself as James Ro, brother of the store owner Jason Ro, and said he could not remember the store ever being robbed.
“Our father opened the store around 1989 or 1990 and my brother has been running it for quite a few years now,” he said. “In 30 years there has never been anything like this happen and now my brother is in the hospital with serious injuries — it’s just not right.”
Police report the man was sprayed with an unknown substance, but was still able to follow the suspect(s) out of the store where a physical confrontation occurred.
Ro said despite being sprayed, his brother was able to chase the men from the store with a golf club.
Ro said his brother was stabbed several times and was seriously injured before being rushed to Kingston General Hospital by EMS.
“As far as I know he is okay now after surgery and they have him resting at the hospital in Kingston,” Ro said. “I think they are supposed to wake him up this afternoon and hopefully then he will be able to tell the police more. These guys need to be caught.”
The first male suspect is described as tall with a thin build, wearing red pants with a white stripe, a camouflaged hoodie, and carrying a dark coloured bag. The description of the second male is limited to just dark clothing. Both suspects were last seen driving southbound on Cannifton Road in a dark coloured vehicle, possibly a Hyundai.
On Thursday afternoon, a GoFundMe campaign was started to help the Ro family. The campaign has a target of $3,000. To contribute, visit gf.me/v/c/jzt4/help-jay-amp-his-family-after-this-tragic-robbery
